Eventho it was a base model, with 2 accidents, and 80k miles, for 10,000 dollars. Eventho we found better options. When the bank loan came through on he went out and bought it.
Like seriously, every time.

You should go buy one of the others and then brag about it to them incessantly.

I always ask
“what car do you want?”
“well I really like the _____ and...”
“buy that”

When people ask for advice they’re usually just looking for approval of the decision they’ve already made. The only time I’ve really been able to steer people is when they don’t have a specific car in mind yet and ask me for a list in a given price/size range.
The one exception in my experience was when my dad w as interested in a Honda CR-V and I told him to look at the Forester, which he ended up getting.

the 201 2 Civic isn’t a bad car at all. It’s just that he over paid for it. By a lot. He could have found a newer nicer civic for 10k

And this is why I never offer car buying advice for free.
Except when it comes to a Miata.

This is why I never give car buying advice anymore.

I hate this...I explain to my friends. “Look, I love cars...I love driving. I goto racing events. You don’t wanna race me in video games or gokarts. I love it, the smell, the sound and fun. If you ask me for advice and get a basic Toyota Camry I will hate you for eternity. So, do you really...really...want my advice?”

I just tell people to get a Corolla.
It’ll do what you need, last forever, and be cheap to run/maintain.
If the Corolla isn’t big enough for them, I just tell them to get a fucking crossover, it doesn’t matter which, just get the cheapest one that does what you want or has the features you want. They all look the same and have the same function anyway.
If they say they need 4WD/AWD, I just say no.

But the answer is always miata

This, exactly. When someone who I know is not a car person, doesn’t care about cars, and is not great on maintenance asks for advice, I tell them CamryAvalon CorollaES, and they go out and buy a Malibu or a Hyundai or a 3-Series instead, so I’ve stopped giving advice. “ You like the Altima huh, yeah, that’s definitely a midsize car, good luck with it.”

Meh, some things you just have to not care about. If somebody else isn’t living their life to its fullest, that’s no reason for you to stress. Even so, t here exists the possibility that this particular car is indeed the one car in the universe that will bring this person the most joy vs what they put in. Heck, following somebody else’s advice instead of their heart may cause them more stress than having the car they chose turn out to be a pile . If you look at it that way, everything worked out the best it could!
My mom recently pretty much gifted her nice Volvo to my brother and is full-time either hitching rides from my dad or driving her work Chevy Spark (non-EV!!). I think she’s loving it!

people always end up buying whatever the hell they want anyways... often when they ask it’s either they have absolutely no clue... or are just looking for validation for what they have in mind

jesus christ, that’s about $2,000-3,500 more than he should have paid. man, did he get bent over.

yep. It’s funny, you can give someone recommendations, they can
ignore each and every one of your recommendations,
and when they buy what they want and aren’t happy it’s somehow still your fault.

Same! Just buy what you like. Most of my advice is more towards financing/please don’t pay that much for a Chevy

I did suggest a e90,GTI, and a Hyundai Genesis. Had to get the OppoApproved ones in there. But the serious suggestion was a 2016 Scion iM.
